Day 1 Recap of Athletics at CWG 2026: Sarvesh Kushare bags maiden silver; Tejaswin Shankar, Tejas Shirse ruled out

India bagged 1 medal in Athletics at CWG 2026 so far.

India’s athletics contingent made a positive start to their Commonwealth Games 2026 campaign on Monday with Indian national record holder Sarvesh Kushare winning the silver medal in the men’s high jump.

M Sreeshankar, Lokesh Sathyanathan and Tejas Shirse advanced to their respective finals while sprinter Gurindervir Singh narrowly missed out on qualification in the men’s 100m.

Sarvesh Kushare soars to high jump silver

Indian national record holder Sarvesh Kushare clinched the silver medal in the men’s high jump at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow with a best clearance of 2.25m.

Sarvesh cleared 2.25m on his final attempt before narrowly missing 2.28m. Fellow Indian Tejaswin Shankar withdrew after failing to clear 2.05m to protect his knee ahead of the decathlon, while Aadarsh Ram finished fifth after clearing 2.15m.

Sreeshankar, Sathyanathan book long jump final berths

Asian champion M Sreeshankar comfortably qualified for the men’s long jump final after clearing the automatic qualifying mark of 8.00m with an 8.01m leap on his very first attempt in Group A.

The 27-year-old, who claimed silver at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and owns a season’s best of 8.38m, was the only athlete from Group A to achieve direct qualification. Joining him in the final was fellow Indian Lokesh Sathyanathan, who secured qualification through the top-12 rule.

Competing in Group B, Sathyanathan produced a best jump of 7.77m in his opening attempt to finish fourth in his group and advance to the medal round.

Alongside Sreeshankar, Jamaica’s Tajay Gayle (8.10m) and Uroy Ryan (8.04m) were the other athletes to achieve automatic qualification. The men’s long jump final will be held on Wednesday at 11:50 PM IST.

Injury mars Tejas Shirse’s and India’s maiden CWG 110m hurdles final

National record holder Tejas Shirse became the first Indian athlete to qualify for the men’s 110m hurdles final at the Commonwealth Games.

The 24-year-old finished third in Heat 1 with a time of 13.76 seconds, placing sixth overall across the heats to book his place in the final.

Unfortunately, his campaign ended in disappointment after the Indian hurdler suffered an injury as he clipped the opening hurdle and appeared to pull up midway through the race, visibly struggling for the remainder of the event. He eventually crossed the finish line in 15.40 seconds to finish eighth.

Gurindervir Singh bows out in men’s 100m

India’s Gurindervir Singh could not secure a place in the next round of the men’s 100m. Competing in Heat 4, Gurindervir clocked 10.39 seconds to finish second behind Jamaica’s Rohan Watson, who finished first with a time of 10.13 seconds.

However, his timing was not enough to earn one of the fastest qualifying spots across the 11 heats, ending his campaign in the event.

The performance was also well outside Gurindervir’s national record of 10.09 seconds, which he had set earlier this season.
