Day 3 Recap of Athletics at CWG 2026: M Sreeshankar bags silver; Tajinderpal Singh Toor advances to final & more

Animesh Kujur topped the men’s 200m heats on day 3 of the CWG 2026.

India enjoyed another encouraging day in athletics at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, highlighted by Murali Sreeshankar’s silver medal in the men’s long jump.

The day also saw Animesh Kujur book a place in the men’s 200m semi-finals while Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill progressed to the men’s shot put final. However, Parul Chaudhary and Manpreet Kaur narrowly missed out on podium finishes.

Sreeshankar scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win two Commonwealth Games medals in the men’s long jump.

The 27-year-old produced a best leap of 8.09m to secure silver behind Jamaica’s Tajay Gayle (8.15m) while Scotland’s Stephen Mackenzie (8.08m) claimed bronze. Fellow Indian Lokesh Sathyanathan finished fifth with a best effort of 7.97m.

In the women’s 3000m steeplechase, Asian Games champion Parul Chaudhary finished fifth after clocking 9:26.75. Kenya’s Faith Cherotich dominated the race, winning the gold medal with a time of 9:01.76, while Parul was unable to translate her brilliant season into a Commonwealth Games medal.

There was heartbreak in the women’s shot put as Manpreet Kaur narrowly missed out on a podium finish. Her fifth-round throw of 17.49m had briefly lifted her into the bronze-medal position, only for Jamaica’s Lloydricia Cameron to produce a 17.87m effort with her final throw, pushing the Indian down to fourth.

The event saw Sarah Mitton (Canada) defend her title with 19.88m while Jessica Oji (Nigeria) claimed silver on countback after both recorded 17.87m.

On the track, national record holder Animesh Kujur topped the men’s 200m heats. The Indian sprinter won his heat in a season-best 20.46 seconds and advanced to the semi-finals after finishing seventh overall across the qualifying rounds.

India also enjoyed a successful outing in the men’s shot put qualification. Former champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor qualified by securing the 2nd spot overall with a throw of 21.03m while Samardeep Singh Gill finishes fifth after registering 19.95m. The Indian duo will return for the medal event on Thursday night.

In the men’s 400m hurdles, Yashas Palaksha clocked 49.65 seconds to finish third in Heat 1, while Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan also placed third in Heat 2 in 49.51 seconds. Both athletes progressed to the final as two of the fastest non-automatic qualifiers.

With another athletics medal added to the tally and several finalists still in contention, India heads into the next day of competition with hopes of adding more podium finishes in Glasgow.
