All you need to know about boxing at the Commonwealth Games
It is one of the most physically demanding disciplines at the multi-sport event.
Boxing will be a part of the list of disciplines at the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG). The quadrennial meet will take place in Birmingham, England which will see the representation of athletes from the commonwealth countries. When it comes to popular sports, then boxing is up there among the most popular ones. It has been part of the CWG since the inaugural edition and has a huge fan following across the globe.
England is the all-time leading medal winner in this discipline. However, the competition gets tougher with new competitors hungry to prove their mettle every edition. The 2022 Birmingham Games will see boxers, both men and women, fight it out in multiple categories to secure medals for their nations.
The 2022 Commonwealth Games start on 28 July 2022 onwards and boxing is one of the disciplines that will be at the centre of attention. Here is a look at a brief history of boxing at the CWG, what to expect in the upcoming edition and so on:
History
As aforementioned, boxing has been part of the Commonwealth Games lineup since the beginning. From the 1930 edition in Canada, boxing has never been excluded from a CWG edition till today. When it comes to all-time leading medal winners, then the English lead the competition by winning 60 golds, 28 silvers and 40 bronze medals.
It is also the only country to win over a century of medals (128). Canada comes second with 88 total medals and Australia is in third place with 70 medals. India is currently in 10th place with 8 golds, 12 silvers, and 17 bronze medals.
Boxing at the 2022 Commonwealth Games
The 2022 CWG will have boxing bouts from 29 July 2022 onwards. They will run until 7 August 2022 when the medal bouts will take place. The National Exhibition Centre in Solihull will be the venue for the bouts. There are 16 golds, 16 silvers and 32 bronze medals up for grabs for both the men's and the women's boxers in multiple weight categories.
Indian Contingent
India is the tenth best nation when it comes to past performances in boxing. The country has a total of 37 medals and will look to add to this tally in the 2022 edition. It won three golds, silvers and bronze medals each last time in 2018, to finish with nine medals. That was at par with England at the top which also won nine medals, however it led with six gold medals.
India is sending a 12-member team to the 2022 CWG. Eyes will be on the likes of World Champion Nikhat Zareen, and Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain among others. Below are the men’s and women’s boxing teams that will hope to bring medals back home from Birmingham.

Amit Panghal (51kg), Mohammad Hussamuddin (57kg), Shiva Thapa (63.5kg), Rohit Tokas (67kg), Sumit Kundu (75kg), Ashish Chaudhary (80kg), Sanjeet (92kg), and Sagar (92+kg)
Women’s Boxing Squad
Nitu Ganghas (48kg), Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Jasmine (60kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (70kg).
