Mirabai Chanu is a two-time defending CWG champion.

It is not often one would see an Indian dominating an Olympic sport in a global event. However, Mirabai Chanu has been doing this in the women’s 49kg category at the Commonwealth Games for nearly a decade.

The 31-year-old has been one of those outstanding athletes who have consistently delivered excellent performances at global and continental events.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games was one such event where she dominated from the start. Coming in as the defending champion and from the high of a silver-medal-winning performance at the Tokyo Olympics, she entered the competition as the favourite to win her division.

She lived up to the tag with a CWG record-breaking start in the snatch category with a lift of 84kg. Before others could think about it, she broke that record with an 88kg lift. She tried to break the 90kg barrier, which she had set for herself coming into the Games, but it was unsuccessful.

With a commanding lead of 12kg, the Manipuri ace participated in the Clean and Jerk category solely to break the record. She became the first to break the 100kg barrier in this category with a lift of 109kg. Much like in the previous category, she once again broke her record with a lift of 113kg.

She went for 115kg but couldn’t do it. With a total of 201kg, she once again broke the Games record and successfully won her second Gold medal in two CWG games.

The gap of 29kg between the first two medalists shows the magnitude of domination Chanu had in the event. She will again be a favourite to defend her title.

India’s flag bearer for Glasgow 2026

She will once again represent the country in the same category in Glasgow. In fact, Chanu will be the flag-bearer at the opening ceremony of this event.

She would have good memories of the venue, having won her first CWG medal back in 2014. It was a silver as she lost the Gold to her fellow Indian Sanjita Chanu.

But the two-time defending champion would want to make it three in Glasgow, which no one has ever done in Women’s Weightlifting. As the 31-year-old chases history, the whole of India will be behind her giving all the strength to make it happen.
