India have sent 7 para-powerlifters for the Commonwealth Games 2026.
India scripted history in para-powerlifting at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, winning their maiden gold medal in the discipline. Sudhir secured victory and brought glory to his country in a sport in which his country had never before tasted success, breaking multiple records.
After lifting 208 kg and 212 kg in his initial two lifts, Sudhir produced a Games record by lifting 217 kg in his third attempt.
Unfortunately, in July 2023, the Commonwealth Games Federation disqualified Sudhir’s result due to an anti-doping rule violation, forcing him to hand over his gold medal to Nigeria’s Ikechukwu Christian Obichukwu.
After this controversy, the para-powerlifter from Haryana will be further determined and motivated to prove to the world why he deserved the gold medal four years ago. Sudhir will be joined by multiple Paralympians, who will aim to make their mark at the Glasgow Games and win their maiden CWG medal.
Ashok Kumar Malik, a World Cup silver medallist and Asian-level medal winner, will arrive at the Games as one of India’s brightest prospects. Parmjeet Kumar, the 2018 Asian Para Games bronze medallist, could also be a podium contender. Kasthuri Rajamani from Tamil Nadu is worth keeping an eye on from the women’s category.
