Indian boxers have an unfortunate start to Commonwealth Games 2026
The Commonwealth Games 2026 are only one day away. The competition will feature 74 countries for the first time in history, following the addition of Togo and Gabon. The sporting action in Scotland will start on July 23, with the final remaining events taking place on August 2, making it a 10-day multi-sport event.
Interestingly, for the first time in the event’s history, the opening ceremony will take place in an indoor venue. India has sent a total of 126 athletes to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, including para-athletes.
Due to the absence of sports like wrestling, badminton, table tennis, and shooting, other sports such as boxing and weightlifting become India’s top hopes for medals. India has sent a 22-member team to the Commonwealth Games; however, their arrival in Scotland’s largest city has been met with inconvenience.
Indian boxers’ luggage goes missing just 1 day before Commonwealth Games 2026
Before even the Commonwealth Games got underway, the Indian boxing contingent had suffered a major blow. Almost half of the team’s luggage has been left in Belfast, Northern Ireland’s largest city, ahead of the 2026 Glasgow Games.
The nation’s complete contingent arrived in Glasgow; however, the bags of Sakshi Chaudhary, world champion Jaismine Lamboria, Parveen Hooda, Jadumani Singh, Kapil Pokhariya, and men’s head coach C. Kuttappa, among others, could not arrive with them.
Team members later revealed that the aircraft operating the short Belfast-Glasgow route was small. Thus, it could not carry the luggage for the boxers. Meanwhile, the missing luggage includes training gear and the ceremonial outfits the pugilists are scheduled to wear at the opening ceremony.
