Top five Indian boxers to watch out for at Commonwealth Games 2026

Given India’s stellar performance at the previous Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, there will be high expectations in the boxing events at the Glasgow CWG. India won seven medals in the sport in the 2022 CWG.

However, the situation will be different this year, as all three gold medalists from last time in Amit Panghal, Nitu Ghanghas and Nikhat Zareen will not be featuring this time around in Glasgow.

Out of the 14 boxers selected for the Games, 11 of them will be making their Commonwealth Games debut. Given the country’s historic success in this sport, it will be interesting to see how India’s young boxers perform under immense pressure.

Indian boxers to watch out for at Commonwealth Games 2026

Lovlina Borgohain (Women’s 75kg)

Lovlina Borgohain is the Tokyo 2020 bronze medalist and will be looking to improve her record at the Commonwealth Games, after losing in the quarter-finals in 2022. Her performance in 2026 has been outstanding; she won the gold medal at the 2026 Boxam Elite International held in Spain.

She also reached the semi-finals at the Asian Championships in April, and hence enters the Glasgow Games with confidence and motivation.

Jasmine Lamboria (Women’s 57kg)

Jasmine Lamboria’s first major medal came four years back in the women’s 60kg lightweight division at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. She arrives in the 2026 edition as one of India’s brightest prospects, given her excellent recent results.

Lamboria became the first Indian to win gold at the World Boxing Championships, beating Paris Olympics silver medallist Julia Szeremeta 4-1 in the final. She had also won gold at the World Boxing Cup in Astana earlier that year. She’s currently the World No. 1 in her weight class heading into Glasgow.

Her early exit from the Paris Olympics motivated her to work on her game, and she now has the chance to prove herself at one of the world’s biggest sporting platforms.

Sakshi Choudhary (Women’s 51kg)

With no prior experience at either Commonwealth or Olympic Games, Sakshi Choudhary will make her maiden appearance at a major competition.

Despite a disappointing start to the year, where she lost in the quarterfinals of the National Championships, the 25-year-old Indian made heads turn at the selection trials in May.

Choudhary stunned two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen 4-1 in the semifinal, and then blanked reigning World champion Minakshi Hooda 5-0 in the final. She backed her performances with a gold medal at the Grand Prix in the Czech Republic, and enters the Games as India’s dark horse.

Preeti Pawar (Women’s 54kg)

Preeti Pawar heads into the 2026 Commonwealth Games in excellent form after a string of impressive international performances.

The 54kg boxer, who represented India at the Paris 2024 Olympics, recently defeated Paris Olympic bronze medallist Aeji Im of South Korea by a dominant 5-0 margin to reach the final of the 2026 Asian Boxing Championships, where she finished runner-up to three-time world champion Huang Hsiao-wen of Chinese Taipei, and later also claimed gold at the Grand Prix Usti nad Labem in the Czech Republic

Sumit Kundu (Men’s 70kg)

Sumit Kundu is the most experienced boxer from the Indian men’s field. His debut at the 2022 Birmingham Games ended with a one-sided loss at the hands of Callum Peters in the pre-quarterfinals.

He did show promise before those Games, though, winning gold at the 2022 Thailand Open and upsetting World Championships silver medallist Dzhambulat Bizhamov of Russia at the Strandja Memorial. He stands out as the strongest male boxer amongst the current field.
