Mirabai Chanu is the latest athlete to join this elite group of players.

In sports, winning once is a matter of talent and winning twice demonstrates consistency; however, winning at the same level in the same event across three different editions of the Games is a truly special achievement.

This feat is called the “three-peat,” inspired by basketball’s title-defence culture but perfectly suited to describe an athlete who refuses to let go of a crown.

At the Commonwealth Games, where fortunes fluctuate and reigning champions often succumb to younger athletes driven by greater zeal and passion, winning three consecutive times stands as proof that the athlete has defined a distinct era and cemented their legacy in history books.

For India, this feat has been achieved by a small group of athletes spanning three very different disciplines in shooting, wrestling, and weightlifting. Let’s take a closer look at each of their journeys and the mark they have left on their respective sports, which will be remembered for generations to come.

Indians who have completed a three-peat at CWG

Jaspal Rana – Shooting

Jaspal Rana was the first to accomplish this milestone. Long before India built a shooting factory out of Haryana’s ranges, Rana was doing it solo with a centre-fire pistol in his hand.

He won gold in the 25m Centre Fire Pistol at three straight editions, including Victoria 1994, Kuala Lumpur 1998, and Manchester 2002.

What made it even better is that he added a fourth gold in 2006 alongside Samaresh Jung, highlighting his tremendous consistency in the discipline.

Sushil Kumar – Wrestling

Sushil Kumar did his three-peat the hard way, by changing weight classes mid-stream and still finding a way to finish on top. He won his first CWG wrestling gold at 66kg in Delhi 2010, then jumped up to 74kg for Glasgow 2014, where he pinned Pakistan’s Qamar Abbas in just 107 seconds to take gold.

Four years later in Gold Coast, in the same 74kg category, he beat South Africa’s Johannes Botha by technical superiority in only 80 seconds, without dropping a single point across the entire tournament.

Vinesh Phogat – Wrestling

Vinesh Phogat’s three-peat reads like a masterclass in patience and physical reinvention. She won her first gold at 48kg in Glasgow 2014 as a teenager fresh off her international breakthrough, moved up to 50kg for Gold Coast 2018 and won that too.

She completed her hat trick by climbing again to 53kg for Birmingham 2022, where she went through the entire Nordic-format group stage undefeated, finishing with a win over Sri Lanka’s Chamodya Don to become the first Indian woman to win three CWG wrestling golds.

Mirabai Chanu – Weightlifting

India’s weightlifting queen Mirabai Chanu’s triumph in 2026 makes her the newest entrant in this list. She won silver at her debut CWG in 2014 and subsequently won three consecutive gold medals at Gold Coast 2018, Birmingham 2022, and Glasgow 2026, where she broke her own Commonwealth Games ‘snatch’ record by lifting 85 kg.
