Lawn Bowls at Commonwealth Games 2026: What is the sport & what are its rules? All you need to know
Six Indian athletes will compete in the lawn bowls sport in the 23rd Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth Games 2026 began on Thursday, July 23, in Glasgow, Scotland. The multisport tournament will get underway with lawn bowls, with India sending a six-member contingent to the event.
The game of lawn bowls mostly relies on an athlete’s judgement of distance, angle, and, more importantly, on the curve of the bowl.
The sport tests an athlete’s control and consistency with their critical thinking. A relatively lesser-known sport among the Indian public, lawn bowls has attracted some of the most clap-worthy moments with the thrill it carries.
Lawn bowls rules
The objective is clearly defined – the players have to place the bowl closer to a small white or yellow target ball, which is also known as the jack or kitty. The intention is to time the bowl well so that its distance is closer to the jack than their opponent.
The points are awarded to players at the end of each round (or “end”) for every bowl finishing closer to the jack than the opponent’s nearest delivery.
What excites the viewers is how players play their shots with the bowls, which are asymmetrical in shape. It is worth noting that the bowls, which weigh around 1.5 kg, do not travel in a straight line, rolling in a curved path across the surface.
This is where every shot forces players to carefully figure out both the line (for angle) and weight (for speed) of their delivery. The idea is also to play their shots tactically to strike the jack to shift its position or knock an opponent’s bowl out of scoring range.
How is it played?
A coin toss takes place to decide which player will roll the jack. Once the jack is rolled, it must travel at least 23 metres, and when it stops, that marks the target. The opponents then alternate to roll their bowls, each attempting to land as close to the mark as possible.
The player or team that gets closer to the jack is awarded one point. In singles, the first player to reach 21 points wins. In pairs and teams events, the team that has the most points after a set number of ends (turns) wins.
Each team has a skip, who acts as the captain and decides the strategy and delivers the final bowl.
What has changed in lawn bowls for Commonwealth Games 2026?
In the history of the Commonwealth Games, this will be the first-ever instance where both Lawn Bowls and Para Bowls will be staged entirely indoors at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC).
This marks a shift from traditional outdoor greens to an indoor carpet environment that removes wind and weather variables. It will contribute towards a faster, highly predictable surface where fine margins command victory.
The Glasgow 2026 programme will focus on four main medal disciplines, featuring both Singles and Pairs events:

- Men’s Pairs
- Women’s Singles
- Women’s Pairs
With the indoor setting favouring high precision and quick adjustments, composure under pressure will be just as critical as technical mastery. Spectators can expect tight, tactical duels where a single delivery can completely alter the outcome of a match.

India has been dubbed as a strong medal contender in lawn bowls at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
After their historic gold and silver medal finishes in the team events at Birmingham 2022, the contingent will head to the Games with confidence and experienced players to compete in the singles and pairs events.
In Birmingham, the top prize was bagged by the women’s fours team of Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia, and Rupa Rani Tirkey. Meanwhile, the men’s fours team of Sunil Bahadur, Navneet Singh, Chandan Singh, and Dinesh Singh clinched silver.
While this year’s edition features just the singles and pairs categories, India will still hope to enjoy similar success in the sport.
Dinesh Kumar, who is set to become his nation’s oldest-ever player in the tournament, will be among those looking to add to their CWG medal tally. The expectations on the players will be immense as they walk into the tournament, not just as participants, but as medal holders.
