Mirabai Chanu joins elite list with three-peat at Commonwealth Games

India’s weightlifting queen Mirabai Chanu lifted a total of 190kg at the Commonwealth Games 2026 to win gold in the women’s 48 kg category, setting a Games record in the snatch, clean & jerk, and combined total.
The Tokyo Olympics silver medalists earned India’s third medal at the Glasgow Games. Chanu made history by establishing herself as one of the greatest weightlifters in Indian sports history.
Meanwhile, she will face significantly tougher competition for the Asian Games gold, especially from China and North Korea.
Currently focusing on her performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Mirabai Chanu has joined an exclusive list of Indian sporting icons by winning her third consecutive gold medal at the Games. Chanu commenced her CWG journey at the 2014 Glasgow Games, where she won a silver medal.
She later won a gold medal at the 2018 Gold Coast Games before defending her crown at the 2022 Birmingham Games. Leading the Indian weightlifting contingent from the front, she has won her third consecutive gold medal in Glasgow.
Chanu becomes only the fourth Indian with golds in three consecutive editions

Chanu has joined Vinesh Phogat, Sushil Kumar, and Jaspal Rana in the list of players who have won a gold medal for India in three consecutive editions of the Commonwealth Games.
Jaspal Rana, the most decorated Indian at the Commonwealth Games, won a total of nine gold medals, at least one at every single edition. Rana, who has won 15 medals at the Games, was the first Indian to reach the feat.
Two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar became the second athlete to reach the milestone. He won gold medals in the 2010 New Delhi, 2014 Glasgow, and 2018 Gold Coast Games.
Vinesh Phogat became the second wrestler and only the third Indian to win a gold medal at three consecutive Commonwealth Games. Now, Chanu has become the fourth athlete to join the list.
