There were many historic moments for the Indian contingent at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

The Indian contingent finished fourth at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, behind Canada, after winning 61 medals.

India won 22 gold, 16 silver, and 23 bronze medals, taking their tally to 564 in this quadrennial event. This was India’s fifth-best performance in terms of medals won. In the 2018 Gold Coast Games, the Indian contingent had won 66 medals.

Gold and Silver in Men’s Triple Jump

Eldhose Paul made history on August 7th, 2022, becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal in the men’s triple jump at this tournament. The achievement became even more special when his fellow jumper Abdulla Aboobacker won the silver medal.

The duo celebrated their win with a lap at Alexander Stadium, with the Indian flag wrapped around them. Indian fans must have remembered this moment for a long time.

Silver medal for Women’s Cricket team

The Women in Blue lost to Australia in the women’s T20 cricket final. However, they won a silver medal in the quadrennial tournament. Harmanpreet Kaur & Co. were expected to end their campaign on a high, but they clinched silver, which was a huge achievement in itself.

The Women in Blue had beaten England in the semi-final and qualified for the final. They had also defeated teams like Barbados and arch-rivals Pakistan during the group stage.

First-ever gold medal in Powerlifting

India’s star para powerlifter Sudhir left everyone surprised after he lifted 212kg during his second attempt in the men’s heavyweight category. After lifting this much weight, he was sure he would win a gold medal for the country, and it was also the first-ever gold medal in this sport.

He had surpassed Nigeria’s Ikechukwu Obichukwu (133.6 points) for the second spot by 0.9 points, as his final score had created a games record of 134.5 points for the pole position. He had created a memorable moment after finishing at the top.

First-ever medal in Women’s Javelin Throw

Annu Rani won the country’s first medal in the women’s javelin throw after throwing 60m in the summit clash. She finished 210cm ahead of Canada’s Elizabeth Gleadle. She missed three of her six attempts, but her 60m throw on the fourth attempt secured the medal.

Gold medal for Women’s fours in Lawn Bowls

The Indian Women’s Fours Lawn Bowls team, comprising Lovely Choubey, Pinky, Rupa Rani Tirkey, and Nayanmoni Saikia, delivered dominant performances in the women’s fours category and won gold by beating South Africa in the summit clash. The team won the country’s first medal in this sport.

They lost to England in their first-round match but bounced back against the Cook Islands. They then beat Canada in Round 3, Norfolk Island in the quarterfinals, New Zealand in the semifinals, and South Africa in the summit clash to clinch the gold medal. This was one of India’s best moments during the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
