Indian athletes won 22 gold medals at the previous Commonwealth Games
The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games is set to begin on July 23. 126 athletes from India will vie for medals in Glasgow, Scotland, with the contingent seeking to improve upon their showing in the previous edition.
Indian athletes won a total of 61 medals in 16 sports in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. Of those, 22 medals were gold, marking a superb outcome for the nation.
India finished with the best tally among all 210 nations in four sports: badminton, table tennis, wrestling, and weightlifting. The country also finished second-best in boxing. Overall, India finished fourth in the medals tally in the tournament.
Stars of the Indian contingent, such as Mirabai Chanu, Bajrang Punia, Deepak Mallik, Nikhat Zareen, Satwik-Chirag, and PV Sindhu, did not disappoint, finishing with the top prize in their respective events.
Sudhir was the only para-athlete to win gold, clinching it in para powerlifting. Fans will hope that India’s old guard can carry that same form into the upcoming games.
There were a few disappointments as well. Olympians Anshu Malik and Avinash Sable had to settle for silver medals, while badminton star Srikanth Kidambi managed a bronze medal.
