Who is the most decorated Indian athlete in Commonwealth Games history?

CWG is an international multi-sport event held every four years.

India have been one of the strongest nations in the Commonwealth Games in the last few decades. They have asserted dominance in sports such as shooting, wrestling, weightlifting, and athletics, winning multiple medals across different editions.

Due to a reduction in the number of sports in subsequent editions, athletes’ participation in this multi-sport event has decreased. In the Glasgow CWG, only 215 gold medals are up for grabs across the different sports.

The omission of shooting, wrestling, table tennis, badminton, and squash will take away a few medal hopes for the Indian contingent. However, the athletes will focus on performing their best and securing a podium finish at the multi-sport event.

However, sports fans might have been thinking about the athlete who has secured the most medals for India in the Commonwealth Games.

Jaspal Rana’s success in the Commonwealth Games has been unparalleled. He made his debut at the 1994 Victoria Games and, until the 2006 Melbourne Games, won 15 medals. Nine out of the 15 medals he won were gold.

The pistol shooter arrived at the 1994 Games as one of India’s brightest prospects. At the age of 18, Rana won four medals in Victoria, which included gold in the 25m centre-fire pistol and centre-fire pistol pairs, and silver in the individual 10m air pistol and bronze in pairs.

At the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games, Rana arrived after being unable to practice properly. However, it made no difference as he defended both his individual and pairs 25m centre-fire pistol titles. He also won two silver medals, in the individual and pairs 10m air pistol.

Rana enjoyed his best run at the 2002 Manchester CWG. He bagged six medals in England, which included four gold, one silver, and one bronze, across the 25m centre-fire pistol, 25m standard pistol, and 10m air pistol events. Jaspal Rana teamed up with Samaresh Jung to win the 25m pairs gold medal.

Playing in his fourth and last Commonwealth Games, Rana won only one medal in Melbourne, which was a gold in the men’s 25m centre-fire pistol pairs with Samaresh Jung.

To this day, he stands as the most decorated Indian athlete to ever feature at the Commonwealth Games, just one medal ahead of his friend and former shooting partner, Samaresh Jung (14).
