Lovlina Borgohain has a confirmed medal to her name
Indian boxing star Lovlina Borgohain has secured a place in the women’s 75 kg semi-finals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland. The 28-year-old pugilist from Assam has already secured her maiden CWG medal in this edition before even entering the ring.
Borgohain, the top-seeded Indian boxer in the Glasgow Games, was handed a bye in the five-boxer draw in the women’s 75 kg category. Under the CWG boxing rules, both losing semi-finalists will receive bronze medals, guaranteeing Lovlina’s podium finish.
“This is shocking news for me too,” Borgohain said after being informed about the bye. “I didn’t expect to reach the semi-finals this early, as I didn’t have a medal in the last two Commonwealth Games, and in the last two, I had to fight four or five bouts.”
“It’s probably a blessing that I’m finally getting the reward for all my hard work in these Commonwealth Games, so I feel much better,” she continued. “I can win gold this time.”
The Assam native will now face Tuvalu’s Tarona Taafaki in the semi-finals, with a place in the gold-medal bout at stake. Lovlina, who won the bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and is a former world champion, is still waiting for her maiden Commonwealth Games title.
