The two-time Olympic medallist was recently included in the Athletics Federation of India‘s provisional 32-member athletics squad for the Games despite missing the opening months of the season due to a back injury.

Chopra has not competed since the World Athletics Championships 2025 after opting to focus on rehabilitation. However, with the Indian superstar now set to return to action at the Doha Diamond League on June 19, his chances of making the final Commonwealth Games squad have received a significant boost.

The AFI has named Chopra in the initial list based on his status as one of India’s leading medal prospects, but he must still satisfy the federation’s qualification requirements before his selection is confirmed.

Chopra must register a throw of at least 82.61m in an approved competition before the qualification deadline to confirm his place in India’s final contingent for Glasgow 2026.

The Indian javelin star missed the opening months of the 2026 season due to a back injury, preventing him from competing in events where he could have secured the required mark.

As a result, Chopra is yet to achieve the AFI’s qualification standard for the Commonwealth Games.

The 28-year-old is now expected to use upcoming competitions, beginning with the Doha Diamond League, to secure the necessary distance.

Chopra is set to make his competitive return at the Doha Diamond League on June 19, 2026. The event will be held at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar, and will mark his first appearance since the 2025 World Athletics Championships. A throw beyond 82.61m in Doha would confirm his qualification for the Commonwealth Games.

The Commonwealth Games 2026 will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026. Athletics competitions are scheduled to take place during the second half of the Games at Scotstoun Stadium.

Chopra won gold in the men’s javelin throw at the Commonwealth Games 2018 in Gold Coast but missed the 2022 edition in Birmingham due to injury. Should he qualify, the Indian star will aim to reclaim the title in Glasgow.
