Will Pakistan participate at Commonwealth Games 2026?

Pakistan won eight medals at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

The Commonwealth Games 2026 is just around the corner. The tournament will get underway on July 23 in Glasgow, Scotland, with a total of 74 nations participating. Gabon and Togo will make their debut in Glasgow CWG.

During the last Games, in 2022 in Birmingham, Australia dominated, winning a total of 179 medals, 67 of which were gold. England finished second with 196, and India were fourth in the medal tally with 61 medals, of which 22 were gold.

However, whenever India are mentioned in the context of these games, their neighbour, Pakistan, are also taken into consideration. Now the question is: will Pakistan participate in the upcoming multi-sport event?

Will Pakistan participate in the Commonwealth Games 2026?

Yes, Pakistan are participating in the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The Pakistan Olympic Association (POC) has finalised a 36-member contingent for the Games.

However, the country’s participation in the Games is limited to six sports: athletics, boxing, swimming, gymnastics, judo, and lawn bowls.

The contingent will be headlined by their only individual Olympic gold medalist, Arshad Nadeem. The defending Commonwealth Games javelin gold medalist is expected to face tough competition from India’s Neeraj Chopra and Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage.

Pathirage, who has emerged as a top title contender in recent times, holds four of the top throws in men’s javelin this year. He also logged 92.62 m at the Rome Diamond League and won the Doha Diamond League, making the South Asian men’s javelin rivalry even more intense.

Meanwhile, Major General Adil Rehmani has been appointed chef de mission of the contingent. Nooh Dastgir Butt, who won gold in 2022 in the men’s +109kg weightlifting event, will also be the nation’s top medal hope.

Unlike other sports, which have multiple athletes, Shehzad Ali will represent Pakistan in gymnastics, while Shah Hussain will compete in judo. They produced their best performance during the last edition in Birmingham; thus, they are expected to perform significantly better in the upcoming games.
