Pakistan’s failure to qualify for Super 8 over the USA is one of the biggest shocks of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 has thrown up some jaw-dropping surprises in its group stage round. The failures of a few teams that were expected to get out of the group stage and qualify for the Super 8 round have made the first round of the competition interesting.

The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is the biggest T20 World Cup in terms of the number of teams participating in the main tournament – 20. They are grouped into four groups of five teams each, with the top two advancing to the Super 8 round.

Here are the three biggest shocking eliminations from the group stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024:

Pakistan

From Group A, India and Pakistan were expected to breeze through to the Super 8 round in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. However, Pakistan’s shock loss against the USA in the Super Over and then a collapse against India which saw them capitulate with 48 runs needed in 48 balls with eight wickets in hand meant that they needed help from a couple of other results to go through.

While India beat USA, rain washed out the USA vs Ireland match. USA, who have defeated Canada, finished with five points while Pakistan can get to a maximum of four points. Thus, Babar Azam’s team, which boasts of a deadly four-man pace attack, will have to take the flight back home after their last group game.

Pakistan are the 2009 T20 World Cup winners and reached the final and semi-final of the last two editions. So their early exit, especially with first-timers USA qualifying, is one of the biggest shocks in the history of the competition.

New Zealand

Similar to Pakistan, New Zealand have had success in the last two T20 World Cups – they were runners-up in 2021 and semi-finalists in 2022. However, they had a disastrous start to their campaign this year, losing by 84 runs to Afghanistan. They were then pushed on the brink of elimination further with a 13-run loss against West Indies.

With West Indies and Afghanistan both winning their first three matches, Kane Williamson’s side was eliminated from the Super 8 race even with two games in hand.

Sri Lanka

The current Sri Lankan team is not the Sri Lankan team of a decade ago when they won the 2014 T20 World Cup. However, they have done well in the shortest format recently by winning the Asia Cup a couple of years ago.

So their early exit from the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is a bit of a surprise as Bangladesh and Netherlands remained in the fight longer than Wanindu Hasaranga ‘s side.

The Lankans lost to South Africa and Bangladesh. Then their game against Nepal was washed out. They have one match left, against the Dutch, who are still in the race with Bangladesh.
