Harmanpreet Kaur will lead the India women’s team in the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
The ninth edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is just a few weeks away. A total of ten teams will participate in the tournament.
The Australian women’s team are the defending champions. They have won the last three editions of the women’s T20 World Cup.
The Indian women’s team were knocked out in the semi-final of the previous edition. They would be looking to go two steps better this time.
India are placed in Group A along with Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
On August 27, the BCCI announced India’s squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. Harmanpreet Kaur will be leading the team in the mega event and Smriti Mandhana is the vice-captain. India have gone with an exciting blend of youngsters and veterans.
Three Indian players will be playing the first ICC Women’s T20 World Cup of their careers. This article is related to those three stars.
Three Indians who will play their first Women’s T20 World Cup in 2024:
3. Sajeevan Sajana
A right-arm off-spinner and a middle-order batter, Sajeevan Sajana made a name for herself when she smashed a six off the last ball to win the game for Mumbai Indians in their encounter in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 against Delhi Capitals, which incidentally was her debut match in the competition.
After impressing in the WPL, where she struck at a strike rate of 158, Sajana received her maiden India call-up to the T20I team. She didn’t get many chances for the Indian team, having batted only four times so far.
But, the Kerala all-rounder has been picked in the squad for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 for her dual services. Sajana is a handy all-rounder with power-hitting ability down the order.
2. Asha Sobhana
Asha Sobhana is one of the most exciting T20 bowlers right now in women’s cricket. The leg-spinner is part of India’s squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
The 33-year-old got recognition with her stint with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the two WPL seasons. She has picked 17 wickets in 15 WPL matches and was a key contributor to RCB’s success this year as the franchise won its maiden title. Sobhana has picked up four wickets in three T20Is so far.
She is a smart operator who bowls at varying speeds, and her skillset would suit the pitches in the UAE.
1. Shreyanka Patil
The 22-year-old Shreyanka Patil is one of the biggest match-winners in T20 cricket. An off-spinning all-rounder, Patil has 16 wickets in 12 T20Is and 19 wickets in 15 WPL matches for RCB. Patil was one of the key players in RCB’s WPL title-winning season this year.
She has also featured in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL), where she snapped nine wickets in five outings. Patil will have a significant responsibility in the upcoming women’s global event.
Shreyanka’s participation in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, though, is under a fitness cloud as she is recovering from a fractured finger in her left hand that she sustained during the Asia Cup in July.
