3 opening combinations India could try for 1st ENG vs IND T20I

The 1st ENG vs IND T20I will be played on July 1 in Durham.

The T20I series between India and England is all set to start from Wednesday, July 1. Five matches will be played in this series, with the remaining fixtures scheduled for July 4, 7, 9, and 11 at Chester-le-Street, Manchester, Nottingham, Bristol and Southampton, respectively.

India are playing with the same squad as the one that played against Ireland. Prince Yadav and Suryansh Shedge made their debuted in that series. However, the teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has not yet embarked upon his international cricket journey.

Shreyas Iyer and Co. will aim to put their best foot forward in the series starter, fielding their best combination for the first match. While India are the defending champions of the ICC T20 World Cup, but they had visible problems in the Ireland series.

The XI in that series comprised of many World Cup winners, but they failed to make a mark on the spicy pitches of Ireland. The opening combination came under fire, especially with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on the bench.

The Men in Blue could look to make some adjustments in their opening combination so as to give the team explosive starts in the powerplay.

3 opening pairs that India could try for first ENG vs IND T20I

The Indian management and captain have the luxury of four opening options in the squad, namely, Sooryavanshi, Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan. While Sanju and Ishan are flexible for their batting position, Vaibhav and Abhishek are genuine openers. Here are the various combinations the Shreyas Iyer-led side could try in the 1st T20I.

1. Sanju Samson – Abhishek Sharma

India could look to continue with their first-choice opening combination of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. This gives the team a right-left pair at the top, which helps strategically.

This pair has had great outings in the T20I format for India, including the 98-run stand in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 Final against New Zealand. They are known for their highly explosive and balanced partnership.

2. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi – Sanju Samson

To continue the left-right batting combination, and to bring in some dynamism in the XI, India could hand Sooryavanshi his debut cap for the 1st T20I. The experience of Sanju, and the ball-striking ability of Sooryavanshi could add perfect balance to India.

Abhishek played both games in Ireland scored 49 runs in second match. He could be rested for the first fixture against England.

3. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi – Abhishek Sharma

One bold move that India could take is resting Sanju Samson and having two absolute power-hitters, Sharma and Sooryavanshi, at the opening. Both are proven aggressors and can take the game away from the opposition in the powerplay itself.

Moreover, Sanju failed to score any runs in the series against Ireland, making merely 5 runs in two matches. He could be rested for the first encounter.
