1. Wicket of Chris Gayle in IPL Final 2011
Not many teams have won the IPL title in consecutive seasons. CSK did it first with titles in 2010 and 2011. However, the IPL 2011 final saw a masterclass from Ravichandran Ashwin against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Chris Gayle came into this game with the Orange Cap, but Ashwin removed him for a duck, which gave CSK the momentum. Ashwin finished with 3/16, and CSK won the final and title. Later, Ashwin revealed that Gayle’s wicket was a turning point.
2. Mankading Jos Buttler in IPL 2019
The cricket fraternity across the globe was divided after the Mankad incident in the IPL 2019 when Ashwin ran out Jos Buttler at the bowler’s end. It ignited the argument over the spirit of cricket. It was the fourth game of the season between Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). Ashwin ran out Buttler, who was backing up, and the third umpire confirmed it. Buttler was frustrated with the decision, and it led to chaos. Later, it became the topic of discussion among current and former players.
3. Helping CSK win consecutive titles (2010 and 2011)
Ashwin, in a CSK jersey, had many dominating moments. His best moment probably came when he helped CSK win back-to-back titles. In 2010, CSK won their maiden title, and Ashwin took 13 wickets at an incredible economy rate of 6.10. Later in 2011, he took 20 wickets at an economy rate of 6.15 to complete the twin titles for CSK.
4. Captaining an IPL Team
Many Indian stars have not led an IPL team, but Ashwin, because of his success and smart head, was given the captaincy of the PBKS for 2018 and 2019. As a captain, he came up with many innovative ideas, smart bowling or fielding changes, and others. He led PBKS in 28 games in two seasons. Though they couldn’t achieve success, Ashwin did show some amazing moves as captain.
5. Retire Out in IPL 2022
Ashwin is a gifted cricketer who comes up with smart and innovative ways to counter the game. One such example was seen during the IPL 2022 when Ravichandran Ashwin became the first player to “retire out” voluntarily. It was the game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as Ashwin decided to retire out to enhance the team’s chances of winning. It was the first such instance to happen in the IPL, which led to debate in the cricketing world.
