Aakash Chopra highlighted Gautam Gambhir’s poor record as head coach in test cricket.
Gautam Gambhir has disappointing numbers as head coach of the Indian test team. Although India have been pretty successful in white-ball formats, winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and consistently growing in T20Is, they’ve looked off colours in tests since Gambhir has taken over the responsibility.
In tests, they have been far behind the top-tier sides. At this moment, India have only one win in the last nine games they’ve played. And the defeat in the first test against England in Leeds has certainly increased the pressure on the Indian head coach.
Under Gambhir, India suffered a home series whitewash, which never happened in the entire history of Indian cricket. New Zealand thrashed India 3-0, which then followed by a 1-3 series defeat in Australia.
“Need to deliver the results” – Akash Chopra on head coach Gautam Gambhir’s number in Tests
Since Gautam Gambhir took over as India’s head coach, India have only won one test series, which was a home series against Bangladesh. Apart from that, India have only one test win, which came in Australia.
Moreover, Ravi Ashwin (all formats), Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who were integral part of India’s test setup also retired from the format. The new Indian captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gambhir are hoping to shape a new Indian team, but the start to their campaign in ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle has led to a lot of criticism.
Former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Akash Chopra also raised questions on Gambhir. He pointed out all the defeats India had under Gambhir and talked about the pressure on the Indian head coach.
In a video uploaded on his YouTube channel, Akash said, “There is a lot of pressure on Gautam Gambhir. The pressure is absolutely mounting. The selectors have given everything the coaching staff has asked for. So, if this is the case, then you also need to deliver the results. Period.”
The Indian head coach has been given the full authority, but the results haven’t been as successful as India would want. That is why the ongoing test series in England is very important for Gambhir’s future as head coach, at least in test cricket.
