Abhishek Nayar chooses his 'Trump Card' for ICC Cricket World Cup 2023
Former India all-rounder Abhishek Nayar has given his thoughts on the Asia Cup squad.
As the excitement builds for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023, cricket enthusiasts worldwide are buzzing with anticipation. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recently unveiled a 17-member squad for the prestigious tournament, and one name in particular has caught the attention of both fans and experts alike.
Intriguingly, Nayar emphasized the dual purpose of the Asia Cup testing the core strength of the team while also exploring the depth of the bench. This challenge, he notes, comes from the elevated performance levels of teams like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh in the 50-over format.
Former India all-rounder Abhishek Nayar’s insightful commentary has shed light on a potential game-changer for the Indian cricket team. Nayar’s remarks on Tilak Varma’s selection as a possible trump card for the team in the Asia Cup and even the looming ICC World Cup have ignited discussions about India’s strategic moves.
‘Pleasantly surprised to see Tilak in the squad,’ Nayar on Tilak Varma’s inclusion
Nayar’s attention shifted to the inclusion of Tilak Varma in the squad. His enthusiasm for Varma’s potential as a game-changer in crucial matches is evident in his words. Nayar stated,
“I am pleasantly surprised to see Tilak in the squad. During the West Indies series, we had a lot of discussions about who the middle-order options were for India. Tilak Varma can bowl too, and he is a player for the future who has done well in the IPL as well. Yes, it is a big call. Normally, close to a World Cup, you don’t want to take a lot of chances.”
“But the Asia Cup is the perfect platform to test someone like Tilak Varma and see what he is made of. When you have someone who has shown you a pattern in terms of performing under pressure, I don’t see that as a bad thing. I think going forward, he is someone who can fulfill the role that Yuvraj and Raina played for India with both bat and ball. I think India should try him in big matches at the Asia Cup because if he does well, he could be India’s trump card or x-factor in the World Cup, whom no one has seen before,” Nayar told Jio Cinema.
Nayar’s confidence in Varma’s abilities extended to his belief that the Asia Cup is the perfect platform to test and showcase the young talent. Nayar exemplifies his conviction in Varma’s potential. He underlined the significance of giving Varma exposure in high-pressure matches to gauge his mettle.
