Adam Gilchrist played 80 games in the IPL from 2008 to 2013.
Former Australia wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist, who led Deccan Chargers to the Indian Premier League (IPL) title in the second edition in 2009, revealed his best all-time XI of the IPL. Interestingly, the Australia batting legend picked MS Dhoni as the skipper of his team and ignored Virat Kohli from the list. Notably, Gilchrist made a condition for his all-time IPL playing XI team.
He only considered players who have won at least one IPL trophy. Hence, he couldn’t consider Kohli in his list as the latter has not won any IPL title so far. Kohli has been part of Royal Challengers Benglaluru (RCB) since the first season 2008, but his team has not won the IPL yet.
Also, since Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have won the most IPL titles, Gilchrist’s list was dominated by MI and CSK stars. Out of 11 players, the Aussie commentator picked eight active or former members from both sides.
Adam Gilchrist’s all-time IPL XI
Gilchrist picked Dhoni as captain of his all-time IPL playing XI. He also inducted Rohit Sharma in his team, who has won the most (6) titles in the tournament. David Warner and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who won the titles with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2016, were also part of his team. Below is Gilchrist’s all-time IPL XI.
Adam Gilchrist’s all-time IPL XI: MS Dhoni (C), Rohit Sharma, David Warner, Suresh Raina, Suryakumar Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Lasith Malinga, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Notably, Sunil Narine, Kumar, and Warner are the only three players in Gilchrist’s list who have not played for MI or CSK. In IPL 2025, Narine is part of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) while Kumar is part of RCB. Warner is not part of the IPL 2025 as he went unsold at the mega auction.
Meanwhile, Gilchrist was part of IPL from the 2008 to 2013 seasons. He played 80 games across six seasons and mustered 2069 runs at an average of 27.22. He also slammed two centuries and 11 fifties in the tournament.
The Australia stalwart was part of the now-defunct Deccan Chargers team from the 2008 to 2010 seasons. He led the side to IPL title in the 2009 edition. He later represented Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) from 2011 to 2013 editions.
