After a poor performance in the T20 World Cup 2026, Afghanistan would want to make a strong comeback under the new coach.

Afghanistan, led by Rashid Khan, performed poorly in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 as they failed to qualify for the Super 8, getting eliminated in the group stage. After their early exit, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) also showed exit to Jonathan Trott.

Talking about Afghanistan’s performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, they played four matches and won only two matches against Canada by 82 runs and UAE by 5 wickets. Their performance resulted in the third position on the Group D points table with only 4 points.

Afghanistan appoint Richard Pybus as new head coach

Afghanistan have appointed English-born Richard Pybus as their new head coach. Pybus will replace fellow countryman Jonathan Trott as the national cricket team head coach. Richard Pybus is an experienced coach having worked as coach from U-19 to international cricket.

Richard Pybus is a world-renowned cricket administrator and performance director with an illustrious international coaching career. He is a three-time ICC Cricket World Cup-winning Head Coach & Director of Cricket with an abundance of elite-level experience and success in developing high-performance systems.

His recognized coaching journey includes serving as Head Coach, Director of Cricket, and Head of High Performance for the West Indies cricket team from 2013 to 2019. During this period, he designed and managed the high-performance structure that led to a historic treble of ICC World Cup victories in 2016.

This included the West Indies Men’s, Women’s, and U19 teams all securing world titles in a single calendar year. Previously, Pybus also served as Head Coach of the Pakistan National Cricket Team and guided the side to the ICC Cricket World Cup Final in 1999.

After a disappointing T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, Afghanistan will hope that Richard Pybus will have a positive impact on the team. Pybus will take over the new role ahead of the white-ball series against Sri Lanka in March.
