Afghanistan remain alive in the semi-final race with a 21-run victory over Australia.

Afghanistan recorded their first-ever victory in international cricket against Australia and they did it at a crucial juncture of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

The AFG vs AUS Super 8 clash ended with the Asian side picking up a 21-run victory that kept them alive in the race to the semi-finals and also have made both India and Australia nervous and insecure about their position with regard to the semis.

At the Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown, St Vincent, on Saturday night, Rashid Khan’s team created history to register unarguably their most famous and memorable victory in T20Is.

They had lost to India in their first Super 8 match by a significant margin of 47 runs, while the Aussies defeated Bangladesh by 28 runs (DLS). A loss of any kind for the Afghans in this match would have knocked them and Bangladesh out of the semis race while sealing Australia and India’s place in the knockouts.

Talking about the match, Mitchell Marsh won the toss and elected to bowl first. Afghan openers Ibrahim Zadram and Rahmanullah Gurbaz posted a massive opening stand of 118 runs, but their taking 15.5 overs for these many runs might have been seen as slightly slow, but they were vindicated of their approach eventually. A few hits from Karim Janat and Mohammad Nabi took the side to 148.

While defending what looked nothing more than a par total, Naveen-ul-Haq struck twice early on with the wickets of Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh before Nabi dismissed David Warner. Marcus and Tim David couldn’t add much either but they stood along with Glenn Maxwell, who returned to form against a team he gave nightmares in last year’s World Cup in India.

Once Maxwell was dismissed for 59, by Gulbadin Naib, the Afghan bowlers pounced on the Aussies and bowled them out for 127 with Naib scalping four wickets.

Netizens went wild in celebration of Afghanistan’s historic maiden victory over Australia:
