Afghanistan defeated Australia by 21 runs in their Super 8 clash in St Vincent.
On Saturday night in Kingstown, St Vincent, the Afghanistan cricket team recorded one of the most famous wins of their history by defeating Australia for the first time in international cricket.
This was never expected to be a routine victory for Australia because of the slowish surface at the Arnos Vale Ground. But defeating the mighty Aussies who had won all their matches in the tournament can be considered a major upset for the Afghans.
This victory has thrown open the Group 1 of the Super 8 round and now Rashid Khan’s team have kept themselves alive in the semi-final race of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Not only this, but this has also made matters more complex for Australia, who will face India in effectively a must-win encounter on Monday.
Talking about Group 1 of the Super 8 round, India, with wins over Bangladesh by 50 runs and Afghanistan by 47 runs, sit comfortably at the top of the points table with a healthy net run rate of +2.425. They have a foot in the semis and just need to avoid a big defeat against the Aussies.
Australia are placed second with two points in two games and an NRR of +0.223, followed by Rashid’s team, who also have two points in as many games, with an NRR of -0.650. Placed fourth in the standings are Bangladesh, who are all but out of the semi-final race with two losses.
The matches remaining in Group 1 are IND vs AUS (match number 51) and AFG vs BAN (match number 52).
Afghanistan’s semi-final qualification scenario in T20 World Cup 2024:
If Australia lose to India, then Afghanistan only need to defeat Bangladesh to progress to the semi-final. If Australia defeat India, then Afghanistan will know the exact margin they need to win against Bangladesh to go ahead of either India or Australia on NRR.
