India suffered a disappointing 2-0 T20I series defeat against Ireland.

India’s short T20I tour of Ireland turned into a big talking point after the Men in Blue suffered a 0-2 series loss in Belfast. The hosts beat the Shreyas Iyer-led side by one run in the second T20I in Belfast, completing a historic 2-0 series sweep over the world champions.

It was a surprise defeat, it also ended India’s long unbeaten run in the T20I series and now, a big question mark for the newly appointed captain Shreyas Iyer.

The two matches were both close in their own ways, but Ireland handled the pressure better. They won the first T20I by 34 runs and then the second by just one run. With this, they registered a historic clean sweep against the Shreyas Iyer-led side.

For Men in Blue, this was a rare setback in a format, where they have usually dominated the bilateral series. They won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 and ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, and Ireland defeating two-time back-to-back champions is a great achievement in its own way.

India’s last T20I series loss before this one came against the West Indies in August 2023. That was a five-match series, which India lost 2-3 after losing the first few games, then fighting back and losing the series in the decider. Since then, India stayed unbeaten in T20Is for a long time.

This series loss is also important because it comes at a time when India are trying to settle into a new leadership role. Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy start has been difficult, and the batting unit has not looked fully in sync across both games.

That means India went 1050 days without losing a T20I series before the Ireland defeat ended the long streak. This gap clearly shows how dominant India have been in bilateral T20 cricket during this phase, which led them to lift ICC trophies.
