"I still want to play test cricket.." Discarded Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane eyes India comeback

Discarded Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane has said that he is looking forward to playing test cricket for India once again. The right-handed batsman last played a test match for India in July 2023 against West Indies. Rahane played a crucial role during India’s journey to the finals of ICC World Test Championships (WTC) 2019-21 and 2021-23.
Ajinkya Rahane also helped India defeat Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2020-21 under his leadership. He was vice-captain of India’s test side when Virat Kohli was at the helm. However, he gradually lost his place in the test side to youngsters.

Ajinkya Rahane was seen at the Lord’s during the ongoing third test between India and England. During a chat with former England cricketers Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain on Sky Sports, Rahane said that he still wants to play test cricket for India.
“It’s good to be here. I still want to play Test cricket. I am really passionate about playing Test cricket and at this moment, I am enjoying my cricket. Just here for a few days and I carried my training clothes so that I can keep myself fit. Our domestic season is starting so the preparation has just begun,” the 37-year-old said.
Meanwhile, Rahane was last seen in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. He was appointed as Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) ahead of the tournament. However, his team failed to qualify for the playoffs. During the tournament, he had revealed his wish to play for India once again.
“I would love to be back in the Indian set-up again. The desire, the hunger, the fire is still there. Fitness-wise, I am right up there. I just want to take one game at a time, thinking about this IPL right now, and then, let’s see what happens in the future,” Rahane had said.

Meanwhile, Rahane has been active in domestic cricket since his ouster from the test side. He represents Mumbai team in Indian domestic circuit.
Rahane has played 85 tests so far. He has mustered 5077 runs in 144 innings at an average of 38.46. The right-handed batter has also hammered 12 centuries and 26 half-centuries.
