Daryl Mitchell came out to bat at No. 3 for CSK instead of Ajinkya Rahane.

Ajinkya Rahane, the middle-order Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter, will have to wait for some time to come out to bat in ongoing CSK innings in the ongoing 22nd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

The encounter is being played at the M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on April 8, 2024. Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and chose to bowl first.

Despite losing Phil Salt on first ball of the match, Sunil Narine (27) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (24) gave KKR a flying start, adding 56 runs in 6 overs. But once they got out, CSK tightened the noose on KKR batting.

Shreyas Iyer (34) tried his best, but CSK bowling restricted KKR to 137/9 in 20 overs. Tushar Deshpande and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets, while Mustafizur Rahman picked 2 wickets.

Ajinkya Rahane can only come to bat after 5 CSK wickets are down or not before 10:50 PM

Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Ajinkya Rahane had left the field during the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) batting innings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. A substitute fielder in Shaikh Rasheed was called as Rahane left the field.

It has been stated that the experienced campaigner has a calf injury. Whether Rahane will bat remains to be seen.

An official update from the match has revealed that Rahane can only come to bat after 5 wickets are down or not before 10:50 local time. Hence, Daryll Mitchell was promoted to number three by CSK after opener Rachin Ravindra was dismissed for 15 off 8.

As per the IPL playing conditions, the reason why Ajinkya Rahane cannot come out to bat until 10:50 pm is because he has to serve the time in dressing room for which he was off the field during KKR’s batting innings.

The rule 24.2.3.2 in IPL 2024 playing conditions states: “The player shall not be permitted to bat in the match until his team’s batting innings has been in progress for the length of playing time that is equal to the unexpired Penalty time carried forward from the previous innings. However, once his side has lost five wickets in its batting innings, he may bat immediately. If any unexpired penalty time remains at the end of that batting innings, it is carried forward to the next and subsequent innings of the match.”

Ajinkya Rahane is now Chennai Super Kings’ second-highest run-scorer in IPL 2024, trailing only Shivam Dube (148 runs). He’s scored 119 runs with an average of 29.75 and a strike rate of 130.76.
