Ajit Agarkar has been the chairman of selectors for the last two years.
Ajit Agarkar, chief selector of the Indian Cricket Team, is likely to continue with his role for another year, according to reports in CricBlogger. The former Indian pacer, who completed two years as the chairman of national selectors, is highly likely to get an extension by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He was appointed as the chairman of selectors for a two-year term on July 4, 2023.
Notably, Agarkar was recently blamed for forcing Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to retire from the longest format of the game. Both the senior members were expected to be part of India’s tour of England 2025. However, they announced their surprising retirement from tests last month through social media posts.
After their retirement, rumours were rife that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel’s decisions were the reason behind their test retirements. Ahead of India’s tour of England 2025, selectors appointed Shubman Gill as the new test captain. Moreover, Agarkar was also slammed for ignoring Shreyas Iyer for the England test series.
Ajit Agarkar to continue as India chief selector- Reports
According to a report, Agarkar will continue as the national chief selector amid the Indian Cricket Team’s transition phase in tests and T20Is without Sharma and Kohli.
“Agarkar should continue as chief selector. He is likely to get an extension for sure, but the board will follow the due process to make that happen,” a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying by CricBlogger.
Meanwhile, Sharma and Kohli will continue to represent the national team in ODIs. Sharma is also the captain in the 50-over format. However, it’s not confirmed if the duo will be part of ICC Cricket World Cup 2027, which is scheduled to take place in South Africa and Zimbabwe in October-November 2027.
Notably, there were also reports that Sharma might be replaced by Gill as the ODI skipper after the conclusion of England vs India test series. At the moment, the Indian Cricket Team have three different skippers in each format. Suryakumar Yadav holds the reins of the T20I team.
