Ajit Agarkar joined as chief selector in 2023.

Ajit Agarkar began his tenure as the chief selector of Indian Cricket Team on July 4, 2023. During his tenure, India have won three consecutive ICC events: the 2025 Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026.

His tenure was scheduled to end in June 2026; however, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) extended his tenure for the next three months, which will end in September 2026. But now it seems like the BCCI is not willing to give him another extension.

It seems like Agarkar’s days as chief selectors are over, as an internal source confirmed that the BCCI is looking for someone to replace the latter for this role, as per journalist Vaibhav Bhola. Notably, Agarkar was hoping for another extension in his tenure until the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The UK tour didn’t go well for India, and they lost three consecutive series. Team India have been below average in Tests in the last couple of years. They even failed to win the second Test against Sri Lanka, and now, the reports claiming Agarkar’s exit have surfaced.

A renowned journalist, Vaibhav Bhola, has tweeted on his official X handle about Agarkar’s possible exit. Notably, Agarkar’s three-year tenure will end in September. Though the cricket board has the option to extend it to another year.

But as reported by News 24, the BCCI is likely to explore other options. The BCCI review meeting was held in Mumbai on Thursday. A number of important matters were discussed during the meeting. Gautam Gambhir, VVS Laxman, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer and secretary Devajit Saikia were present in the meeting.

Meanwhile, Agarkar wasn’t there in the meeting, and it raised speculations that Agarkar’s unavailability indicates his possible exit.

The BCCI secretary stated that the 48-year-old wasn’t in the town. Saikia said:

Today he [Ajit Agarkar] was out of station. He could not be a part of the meeting because this meeting was called at a very short notice. And our head of the selection committee, Ajit, he was not in town so he could not join it. And he was in such an area that he could not join online also, in spite of our best efforts.”

When asked about Agarkar’s future, Saikia said, “There was no such discussion in today’s meeting.” Saikia also dismissed all the speculations over Rohit Sharma’s ODI future and said that the board has a solid stance on him playing for India.
