Ajit Agarkar’s contract as the BCCI Chief selector ends in September 2026.

India’s packed international calendar is entering another bust phase with the upcoming home series against West Indies. The Indian side will feature in a long white-ball series across the 20-over and 50-over formats. With several established players competing for places and younger names continuing to push for recognition, all eyes are set on the Indian selectors for the squad selection.

The selection meeting could also carry added significance because of uncertainty surrounding Ajit Agarkar’s future as chairman of the BCCI selection committee. Agarkar’s tenure as the head of the Indian selectors panel ends in September 2026, and nothing has been said about a possible extension to his tenure at the BCCI.

According to Abhishek Tripathi of Dainik Jagron, Agarkar could be set to select what may become his final India squad today, with his contract extension reportedly still pending. It was earlier stated in reports that the squad for the upcoming series against West Indies is likely to be announced around September 16.

This does not necessarily mean that Agarkar will depart immediately. Unless the BCCI formally announces a change, he remains the chairman of the selection committee. However, the absence of an extension has clearly raised the probability of a potential transition.

The West Indies series includes three ODI matches scheduled to start on the 27th of September and will be followed by a 5-match T20I series. The upcoming assignments are expected to feature a mixture of established players and those pushing for a return to the national setup.

Several big names in the Indian contingent are likely to make a comeback. The likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be seen back in action for the ODI series. Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant are among the players who are much anticipated to make a comeback to the Indian limited-overs side.

For Agarkar, meanwhile, the timing adds another layer to an already significant selection meeting. If the BCCI decides against extending his contract, then the West Indies squad could be his last team selected as the chairman of the committee.

When did Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as Indian selector begin?

Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as the chairman of the BCCI senior men’s selection committee began on July 4, 2023.

When will the West Indies series start?

The India vs West Indies white-ball series is scheduled to start from the 27th of September.
