Ajit Agarkar's tenure in doubt? Major revamp likely to take place at BCCI AGM

Ajit Agarkar has made many tough calls as Indian chief selector.

Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as Indian chief selector ends in September 2026. Agarkar took over as the chairman of the Indian men’s senior selection committee in July 2023.

He is currently in Sri Lanka with the Indian team for the SL vs IND Test series. Agarkar’s presence on most of India’s overseas tours indicates that the selection committee is closely involved with the transition of the Indian team. 

Each player is assessed during these tours, and selections for the next series are made based on those evaluations, especially since Indian scouts provide a wealth of domestic talent.

Agarkar’s tenure as the Indian chief selector ends this September as per the previous contract, and the uncertainty over his extension is hampering a major phase in Indian cricket. 

The BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled for 18th September, and it remains to be seen whether the BCCI will discuss his future in this meeting. 

No signs of talks between Agarkar & BCCI over a tenure extension

According to some reports, despite the deadline approaching, neither the BCCI nor Agarkar has initiated any discussions regarding a tenure extension.

Agarkar’s current situation with the Indian team is somewhat complex, as differing opinions on certain decisions made during his tenure could hinder his extension. Recently, there was speculation that VVS Laxman might replace Ajit Agarkar as the chief selector.

Agarkar assumed the chairmanship after Chetan Sharma stepped down in June 2023, and officially, as per BCCI’s rules, his tenure should have continued only until June 2026.

But reports suggested that he was initially handed a three-year contract and was subsequently granted a three-month extension in June 2026 because he was appointed midway through the previous selection committee’s term. 

After returning from Sri Lanka, Agarkar is likely to attend the Duleep Trophy semi-finals, which are scheduled to be played at the BCCI Centre of Excellence from August 30.

With the AGM approaching and no extension talks still on the table, the Indian chief selectors’ chair remains one of the biggest administrative talking points.  

The coming weeks could determine whether Agarkar would continue to oversee India’s selection process or be handed a farewell by the BCCI. During his tenure, Agarkar has made many tough calls; some of his decisions were not met positively by Indian cricket fans.
