Ajit Agarkar's job under threat? THIS India legend likely to replace as chief selector

Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as the chief selector is all set to end in September 2026.
In the last few months, a lot has happened in Indian cricket. From the change of T20I captaincy to T Dilip getting sacked as the fielding coach to Ryan ten Doeschate leaving the coaching role.
Now, according to some reports, the BCCI is not keen on extending Ajit Agarkar’s tenure, the current chief selector of the Indian men’s team. Notably, Agarkar’s tenure ended in June 2026.
However, the BCCI extended his tenure for another three months until September 2026. Agarkar wants to continue until the 2027 ODI World Cup, but the board has some other plans. That is where former Indian star VVS Laxman has come into the mix.
The last few months have not gone well for Team India on the field. The disastrous tours of Ireland and England have changed the Indian board’s mind, and they may consider some new options.
VVS Laxman is the front-runner to replace Ajit Agarkar as chief selector
Earlier, some reports claimed that the BCCI was keen on retaining Agarkar as the head of the selection committee. However, the tour of the UK didn’t go well with India. They were hammered by Ireland and England, respectively.
Additionally, the controversy surrounding Rohit Sharma’s retirement didn’t go well with the Indian board. This has certainly upset BCCI officials, and according to reports, discussions have begun on bringing in a new face to lead the selection committee.
If it happens, VVX Laxman is the front-runner to replace Agarkar. Although there is no official confirmation, the role of the chief selector will be a key topic of discussion at the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for September.
Agarkar’s being chief selector until the 2027 ODI World Cup is still a possibility. He has had a pretty good tenure so far. India have won three ICC titles in this period.
Laxman recently accompanied the Indian team to Zimbabwe as interim head coach. He is also serving as head of cricket at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
When will Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector end?
