Shreyas Iyer could not find a spot in India’s 15-member squad for Asia Cup 2025.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the India squad for the Asia Cup 2025 on Tuesday, August 19. India chief selector Ajit Agarkar and T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav revealed the squad during a press conference in Mumbai.

One of the notable misses in the Indian squad for Asia Cup 2025 was Shreyas Iyer, and his snub came as a big surprise as he has been in phenomenal form this year. The right-handed batsman gave an incredible performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, where he took the Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final after 10 years.

At a stunning average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 175.07, the right-handed batsman slammed 604 runs in 17 games in the tournament. Slamming six half-centuries, including a top knock of unbeaten 97 runs, Iyer was the highest run-scorer for his team and the sixth highest run-getter in the tournament.

After announcing the squad for the Asia Cup 2025, Ajit Agarkar was asked about Shreyas Iyer’s snub. He was honest enough to admit that the batter has to wait for his chance, as they don’t have a place for him in the current scenario.

“No mistake from Shreyas Iyer. At this moment, he has to wait for his chance as we can select only 15 in the squad,” he said.

With Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, and Rinku Singh in the middle-order, there was no place for Shreyas Iyer. Shubman Gill, who last played a T20I in 2024, has been appointed as vice-captain of India for Asia Cup 2025.

Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma have been picked as two wicket-keepers. Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, and Arshdeep Singh will lead the pace attack for India. In the spin department, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy have been picked.
