Virat Kohli is the highest run-getter in ongoing IPL 2024.

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar has finally broken his silence on Virat Kohli as the time gets near to select Team India’s squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The ICC Event will be played in June and will be co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies.

India’s squad for the T20 World Cup is expected to be picked between the last week of April and the first week of May. And the big question is the selection of Virat Kohli. While it was previously confirmed by BCCI secretary Jay Shah that Rohit Sharma will captain the Men in Blue in the T20 World Cup; the question remained on Kohli’s selection.

Kohli, who last played a T20I against Afghanistan early this year, returned to action in IPL 2024 after a two-month break. He was away from the game for the birth of his child and missed the England Test series at home.

Kohli, who has not missed an ICC tournament for India since his debut, was on the verge of missing the World Cup, which begins on June 2, after a top Indian news daily reported that he may be dropped.

Virat Kohli is one of those guys who has set a benchmark- Ajit Agarkar

India’s T20 World Cup roster is likely to be announced in the last week of April and the first week of May, but sources suggest Kohli will not miss the journey to the United States and the West Indies.

A statement from Ajit Agarkar, the BCCI’s chairman of selectors, provides some confidence to Virat’s legions of admirers. Agarkar, a former India all-rounder, praised Kohli’s fitness and its significance in shaping the future of Indian cricket.

“Look at Virat. He is one of those guys who has set a benchmark. 10-15 years into his career, he has only gotten fitter. And you can see the results. If someone like him sets an example, and puts forward certain things that you need, certain fitness levels you need, gradually it has progressed. BCCI has been instrumental as well with all the academies that have happened. You learn a lot quicker. Boys today at 15-16 are a lot fitter than what they were and they should be now with the amount of knowledge, awareness, and facilities available,” Agarkar said on the SportifywithPRG podcast.

Kohli is the leading run-getter in the IPL 2024 with one century to his name and 316 runs in 5 games.
