Ajit Agarkar’s role as the chief selector with Indian Cricket Team has reportedly ended, as the 48-year-old is not willing to extend his tenure. Agarkar started his stint with India in July 2023 and served his role for more than three years.
As reported by the Hindu, Agarkar has conveyed his decision to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he is not looking for further extension.
Hence, the board is all set to look for further options for the vacant post. On Friday, the 95th Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held at the BCCI Headquarters in Mumbai. Several key decisions were made during the AGM meeting.
Arun Singh Dhumal and M Khairul Jamal Majumdar were inducted into the IPL Governing Council. As reported, Agarkar also confirmed his decision during the AGM meeting, and the board accepted his decision.
Ajit Agarkar is not willing to continue as chief selector – Reports

Agarkar’s tenure officially ended in June 2026, and the BCCI extended it for another three months, which was scheduled to end in September. But the last few months didn’t go as planned for the 48-year-old.
There was some news of growing differences between Agarkar and the board over selection calls. As per reports, the interference from the board was one key reason for Agarkar’s decision.
The reports of controversy surrounding Rohit Sharma‘s retirement during the ODI series against England also played a role in it. The 48-year-old was not present at the high-profile meeting held by the BCCI earlier this month.
All these gave fuel to the speculation of Agakar’s possible exit. As per reports from the Hindu, several members, who were present in the AGM meeting on Thursday, confirmed the news.
Hence, the BCCI is all set to initiate the process to find the successor of Agarkar. The 48-year-old was involved in his last selection procedure for the squad against West Indies, along with the Irani Cup squad.
Former Indian keeper Parthiv Patel is among the faces that emerged as the frontrunner to replace Agarkar. Zaheer Khan and Pragyan Ohja are other options available.
