Ajit Agarkar, as per various reports, has been sacked by the BCCI.
Ajit Agarkar became BCCI chief selector in July 2023, and since then, the Indian Cricket Team have attained significant success. Since then, India have reached the final of an ODI World Cup, having won two T20 World Cups and the Asia Cup along with the Champions Trophy.
However, the former Indian all-rounder has also been criticised by Indian fans for his choices. According to recent reports, his fairly successful run could soon come to an end for a couple of reasons.
A report by the Telegraph has claimed that Agarkar was unhappy with the BCCI official’s attempts to interfere in team selection and that he also reportedly had to push back against the authority’s decisions. The report also claimed that the disagreements started in July 2023.
One such instance that led to a major disagreement between Agarkar and the board occurred in 2023 during the T20I series between India and Ireland. Jasprit Bumrah had returned freshly from an injury, and Ajit Agarkar did not want the Indian pacer to captain the team after coming from a long layoff. Instead, he wanted Bumrah to focus on his fitness and recovery and Ruturaj Gaikwad to take charge.
However, BCCI claimed that Bumrah would captain the side because he wanted to, and that is what ended up happening. The former Indian all-rounder wants the selectors to have a bigger say in big decisions made by the board.

Several reports have claimed that Ajit Agarkar’s stint as BCCI chief selector is coming to an end as he won’t be offered an extension for his current role.
Agarkar had another disagreement with the board following the Men in Blue’s buildup for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027. The uncertainty surrounding Rohit Sharma‘s future and role in the team ahead of the World Cup, along with Agarkar’s growing differences with VVS Laxman, has contributed to the deteriorating relationship between the selectors and the board.
Ajit Agarkar also did not attend the review meeting in Mumbai following India’s defeat to England in July. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia defended him; however, the board was unhappy with his decision not to show for an important event.
Thus, the BCCI are likely to look for a fresh face as their chief selector in the coming months.
