The All India Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament 2024 will see India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav feature in it.
The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has announced that it will host the All India Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament this year from August 15 to September 11 2024 at four venues – Natham (Dindigul), Salem, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli.
A total of 12 teams – two sides of TNCA and 10 other states’ teams – will feature in this competition that will host matches in four-day format.
History of Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament:
It is one of the oldest First Class (FC) tournaments in India. The tournament is named after M. Buchi Babu Naidu (real name Mothavarapu Venkata Mahipathi Naidu) who played for the Madras United Cricket Club under British rule.
He is recognised as the ‘Father of South Indian/Madras Cricket’ and is credited for growing the game in Madras (now Chennai). Two of his sons, M. Baliah Naidu and C. Ramaswami, represented India in international cricket.
The Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament tournament started in the 1909/1910 season, a year after Naidu’s death. Initially, it was a memorial event and then became a professional invitational tournament when TNCA took over in the 1960s.
The tournament now signals the start of domestic cricket in India and provides preparation and game-time players ahead of the Ranji Trophy.
The Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament returned last year after a five-year gap.
The tournament has gained traction in recent days after India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav announced that he will play in this year’s edition in a bid to make a comeback to India’s test team. Ishan Kishan is also set to make his comeback to domestic cricket for Jharkhand.
