All you need to know about SA20 trophy

More than just silverware, The SA20 trophy has become one of the most coveted prizes in the T20 format globally.

At the heart of the SA20 League lies its most prestigious symbol — the Betway SA20 Trophy. Unveiled ahead of the inaugural season in January 2023, this stunning piece of silverware embodies both the spirit of modern cricket and the tradition of elite sporting craftsmanship.

The SA20 League is South Africa’s premier franchise Twenty20 cricket competition, bringing world-class T20 action to fans locally and globally. Launched in 2023, the league features six teams representing major South African cities and franchises.

Combining exciting international talent and rising local stars, SA20 has rapidly become one of the most anticipated T20 tournaments outside the IPL, BBL, and PSL. With explosive batting, strategic bowling, and passionate fan support, SA20 continues to elevate cricket’s shortest format in South Africa’s sporting calendar.

Crafted by Thomas Lyte, a London-based silversmith and goldsmith firm, the SA20 Trophy stands as one of the most compelling trophies in sport. The company is known for designing iconic pieces such as the ICC Test World Championship (WTC) Mace and ICC T20 World Cup Crown, and its work on the SA20 Trophy further cements its status in trophy making.

Striking Features and Symbolism of SA20 Trophy

  • Material & Finish: The trophy is made from a silver-plated base metal with 24-carat gold plating, combining luxury with timeless durability.
  • Height & Weight: Standing at 60 cm tall and weighing approximately 14 kg, it makes an imposing sight at the presentation ceremony.
  • Six Handles: Each of the six handles represents one of the founding SA20 franchises, symbolising unity and competition at the highest level.
  • Craftsmanship: The creation involved over 300 hours of meticulous handcrafting, incorporating traditional techniques and modern workshop processes such as spinning, plating, engraving and polishing by master craftsmen.

The trophy’s curved handle arcs are inspired by the trajectory of a cricket ball leaving a bowler’s hand, adding dynamic motion to its form. When viewed from above, the trophy resembles a six-pointed star—evoking a sense of achievement and brilliance in competition.

In the trophy unveiling in 2022, the SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith and the Director of Thomas Lyte- Neil Maclaurin shared their thoughts.
