According to Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni is the best ever Indian captain.
Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu has ranked Rohit Sharma ahead of Virat Kohli among the top Indian captains, picking MS Dhoni as the best captain of India. Rayudu participated in a challenge on ESPN Cricinfo, where he had to rank captains without knowing which name would come next.
During the challenge, the first name was Sourav Ganguly, and he placed him in the third spot. The next name was Kapil Dev, and Rayudu placed him in the fourth spot. Kapil led India to their first ICC Cricket World Cup title in 1983.
The next name on the list was Rohit Sharma. Rayudu put him in the second spot. Notably, he played under Sharma’s captaincy during his stint with the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The next name was Virat Kohli, and he placed him in the fifth spot.

Later, he placed Mohammad Azharuddin at the sixth spot and MS Dhoni at the top spot. Notably, Rayudu played under Dhoni’s captaincy for the Indian Cricket Team. Also, he was part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL from 2018 to 2023.
This is Rayudu’s final rankings for Indian captains-
- MS Dhoni
- Rohit Sharma
- Sourav Ganguly
- Kapil Dev
- Virat Kohli
- Mohammad Azharuddin
Dhoni is often considered as the best captain of the Indian Cricket Team. He led India to three ICC titles under his captaincy – the ICC T20I World Cup 2007, the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, and the ICC Champions Trophy 2013. On the other hand, Virat Kohli couldn’t achieve glory in ICC tournaments as captain. However, he helped India become a dominating team in test cricket and reach the top spot in the ICC rankings.
Rohit Sharma, who took over as India’s captain after Virat Kohli, led India to two ICC titles – the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.
