Amit Mishra overtakes Lasith Malinga to become 3rd highest wicket-taker in the IPL history

Amit Mishra had made his IPL debut in 2008 for Delhi Daredevils.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spinner Amit Mishra became the third-highest wicket-taker in IPL history during his team’s IPL 2023 match against Royal Challengers Banglore (RCB) which was played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on May 1.

RCB captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and chose to bat first. Apart from him returning to first XI, RCB also included Karn Sharma in its XI keeping the Lucknow pitch in mind, while Josh Hazlewood came in for injured David Willey.

LSG, on the other hand, dropped Avesh Khan and brought in K Gowtham.

RCB posted 126/9 with Faf top-scoring with 44 and Virat Kohli making 31. After their 62-run opening partnership, LSG spinners showcased their prowess and tied the RCB batting down. Naveen Ul Haq, picked three wickets while Ravi Bishnoi and Amit Mishra took two wickets apiece.

Amit Mishra, 40, showed how experience comes into play as he outfoxed Suyash Prabhudessai for 6 runs and then took the wicket of RCB captain Faf du Plessis who had top-scored for his team.

Mishra was on 170 wickets before the start of this encounter and was tied with Lasith Malinga for the most wickets in the all-time Indian Premier League list.

However, thanks to these two wickets, Mishra has now gone past Malinga to the no.3 spot and now has 172 wickets in 160* games in IPL at an economy of 7.34 and an average of 23.75. His best bowling figures are 5/17.  

Mishra, who made his IPL debut in 2008 and has played for franchises such as Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Deccan Chargers before the Lucknow Super Giants, is the only bowler with three hat-tricks in the IPL tournament.

Mishra also played 22 Tests, 36 ODIs, and 10 T20Is for India from 2008-2017 and picked up 76, 64 and 16 wickets respectively. He had taken a five-wicket haul on his Test debut against Australia in 2008 in Mohali.
