Andrew Flintoff has been associated with the England team as member of coaching staff.

Andrew Flintoff maintains that he is not interested in taking over as England’s coach in place of Brendon McCullum. After suffering significant facial and rib injuries in his Top Gear collision, Flintoff returned to cricket to supervise the fortunes of the England Lions and Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.

In the event that McCullum decides not to renew his contract with the national team, which spans all three formats and includes the 2027 World Cup, he has been connected to the top England position.

Andrew Flintoff, however, dismissed the idea and instead emphasized how much he loves McCullum, comparing the New Zealander’s impact to that of Sir Gareth Southgate’s tenure as England’s football coach from 2016 to 24.

“Not something I’m looking at”- Andrew Flintoff on becoming next England head coach

Asked about the prospect of taking over from Brendon McCullum, Andrew Flintoff stated that he has zero interest in becoming the next England head coach. He stated that he respects and admires the work McCullum has done with the team, but he is in no hurry to take over from him.

It’s not something I’m looking at, Baz McCullum is incredible – the best England coach. He’s unbelievable, and the culture he’s created is incredible. It’s similar to what Gareth Southgate did with the football lads; they are not just good players but great lads as well.

I’m enjoying working under Keysy (England managing director of men’s cricket, Rob Key), it’s no secret he’s one of my best mates, and he’s helped me so much in other things. With Baz, we’ve got a great relationship and the utmost respect,” Flintoff said on Betfair’s Stick to Cricket podcast.

Former England captain Andrew Flintoff first joined the backroom staff of then-white-ball head coach Matthew Mott on an as-needed basis in September 2023, though he did not go to the World Cup in India that year.

However, he was later involved and a member of England’s coaching staff at the T20 World Cup last year, which resulted in Australian Mott’s dismissal after the team lost in the semi-finals. In his debut season, Flintoff brought the Superchargers within a hair’s breadth of the knockout stages last year.

Honestly, at the moment, I feel as though I’m in the perfect place working with the Lions. I don’t see this as a stepping stone to anything else, I’m invested in this, and I get a chance to work with these lads.

I’m not looking at the franchise world or anything else, although I do the Northern Superchargers, which came around last year, and I enjoy working with (Superchargers captain) Harry Brook on that. I’ve been guilty of, in the TV world and in retirement, of always looking for the next thing, chasing things. I’m actually really happy, working with great lads and great staff around me. I think ‘I’ve got a job to do here’ and it’s not like ‘what’s next?” Flintoff signed off.
