Andy Flower and Gautam Gambhir worked together in the IPL for two years in the LSG franchise.
Former Zimbabwe player Andy Flower has backed the decision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to appoint Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team.
Legendary Rahul Dravid’s tenure as the head coach of the Men in Blue came to an end after India won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 on June 29. After this, BCCI secretary Jay Shah named Gambhir as the new head coach of the senior men’s cricket team on July 9.
The BCCI has appointed Gambhir as the head coach until the ICC ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa. Under Gambhir, the Men in Blue will see a transition phase, with some senior cricketers taking retirements from some formats.
He loves Indian cricket, I really enjoyed working with him: Andy Flower on Gautam Gambhir
The newly-appointed head coach will start his assignment with the Indian side in the away white-ball tour of Sri Lanka. The tour will consist of three ODIs and as many T20Is. The tour will be played from July 27 to August 7.
However, the full schedule of the white-ball tour between the two sides hasn’t been announced by the two cricket boards.
Just ahead of the Sri Lanka series, Flower highlighted Gambhir’s love for Indian cricket. He added that the 42-year-old India head coach has a clear vision regarding the game.
“Well, the first thing he’s got to do is just give up his legends cricket at the moment. He’s quite a man, Gautam Gambhir, I really enjoyed working with him. He’s got strong opinions, he’s got strong, clear views on the game,” Flower was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.
Gambhir is going to be successful as Men in Blue head coach: Flower
Interestingly, both Flower and Gambhir previously worked with each other for two years in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise.
Flower further added that BCCI appointing Gambhir as the head coach is a good decision and the 42-year-old will be successful during his tenure with the Indian cricket team.
As a skipper, Gambhir helped the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) win two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. In the 2024 season, he was with the Kolkata franchise as a mentor and helped them clinch their third title.
“He’s very decisive, he’s a very proud Indian, he loves Indian cricket and his position, representing Indian cricket. I think it’s a good appointment and I think he’s going to be successful,” the 56-year-old Flower added.
