Angelo Mathews departed for a five-ball duck in first ENG vs SL test match.

It was a brain-fade moment for one of the most experienced Sri Lankan batters, Angelo Mathews, as he left a straight ball to England speedster Chris Woakes in the ongoing first test match in Manchester on August 21. It resulted in Mathews’ dismissal and the Lankan batter wasted a review with it.

After being asked to field first, England bowlers dismissed Sri Lanka’s openers Dimuth Karunaratne (2) and Nishan Madushka (4) inside the first seven overs of the first innings.

The incident happened during Sri Lanka’s first innings when Woakes was bowling the last ball of the seventh over to Mathews.

Woakes bowled a length delivery that nipped back in towards Mathews. The Sri Lankan batter didn’t offer a shot and got rapped on the pads. The on-field umpire quickly gave Mathews out.

Mathews challenged the on-field decision with a DRS but replays confirmed that the ball was crashing into the middle stump. Mathews departed after scoring a five-ball duck.

At the time of writing, Sri Lanka are struggling at 80/5 after 25 overs at the lunch break of Day 1 in the Manchester test.

Both teams playing XI:

England: Daniel Lawrence, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope(c), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jamie Smith(w), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Matthew Potts, Mark Wood, Shoaib Bashir
