Anil Kumble criticized precarious team selection.
The former India test captain, Anil Kumble, has raised questions about the erratic selection of the players by the team management led by head coach Gautam Gambhir. India suffered their second whitewash in test cricket at home in the last 12 months, both under Gambhir’s reign.
The Indian team conceded a mammoth 408-run defeat in the second test in Guwahati. This defeat handed the series win to South Africa, their first in India since 2000. This tragic defeat has made several former cricketers and pundits put the team management under the scanner.
Anil Kumble wants a change in the approach
Anil Kumble has criticized the team management for their philosophy in test cricket. The veteran pointed out constant ‘chopping and changing’ in the personnel as one of the factors that has led to this rout in home conditions.
“Test match cricket requires a different mindset, you can’t really have so many all-rounders, so much chopping and changing, so many changes in the batting order, in the team itself. Every second game you have a new player coming in, a couple of guys get dropped,” Anil Kumble remarked.
“You can’t forget these results”
India will play their next test series in August 2026 when they travel to Sri Lanka for a two-match series. That means that there is a considerable gap, and that might result in the team management not addressing these issues as the schedule is packed with white-ball action for the next few months.
“India needs to sit down and think. You can’t forget these results. When stalwarts retire, you need a vision. You can’t throw players in and hope they develop when you have only one or two experienced names left,” commented Kumble, reminding the team management that this process of transition should be carried on with a structured plan.
