Are India A eliminated from Tri-Nation A Series after losing to Sri Lanka?

India A lost to Sri Lanka A in their 3rd ODI of this series.

The Tri-Nation A series is ongoing in Sri Lanka among the India, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka A teams. A total of seven matches are to be played in the series. Today, June 15, IND-A vs SL-A match took place at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Sri Lanka.

India had two contests ahead of this match, and managed to win only one against the hosts. They lost by 4 runs (by DLS method) against Afghanistan, despite scoring 349 runs. The third match was against the hosts, which ended up going till the super over.

Put into to bat first, India struggled terribly to start well. Prabhsimran Singh and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi went off after scoring merely 11 and 21 runs. The leadership pair of Tilak Varma and Ruturaj Gaikwad too failed to contribute significantly with the bat, and scored 23 and 37, respectively.

India were 143-7, but Indian all-rounders Suryansh Shedge (72) and Vipraj Nigam (51) pulled it back for India taking the team to a defendable on par score of 265. Mohamed Shiraz and V Viyaskanth picked 3-wicket hauls each.

Defending 265 was never going to be easy with the lack of wicket-taking bowlers in the side. However, the spinners took wickets and bowled economically, which helped India to tie the game. Sadeera Samarawickrama scored 93 runs and was the main architect of this chase.

In the Super Over, Sri Lanka did well to score 16 runs off it, and India failed to chase it down. Eventually, India lost the match to the hosts, who have now qualified for the Final of this series.

After three matches, India have managed only two points in the series. They have only one match remaining, against Afghanistan. This match will be played on June 17 at the same venue.

Sri Lanka have already qualified for the final in the series. Afghanistan still stand a strong chance for that second spot, if they defeat India on June 17.

It will be a must win game for both teams. If Afghanistan win, they go straight to the Final; whereas, if India win, they will still have to wait for the SL-A vs AFG-A game. In that last match, if Sri Lanka manage to win against Afghanistan by a huge margin, they still stand a chance for the final.

India are the ones under pressure here. They have a lot of bowling to work upon. Their batting hasn’t come through yet, but with the batting depth, they still manage to score well. However, their lack of wicket-taking had cost them the game against Afghanistan previously, and India will need to correct that.
