India won Sri Lanka Test series 1-0 despite Colombo draw
India have had a mixed campaign in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 so far. The Shubman Gill-led side has played 11 Tests in the current WTC Cycle, winning five, losing four and drawing two. India were hoping to collect maximum points from their two-Test series against Sri Lanka, but the series ended with a 1-0 result in India’s favour.
India started the Sri Lanka tour strongly by winning the first Test in Galle. The visitors were looking to complete a 2-0 series sweep in the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. They were in a commanding position for most of the match and even enforced the follow-on after bowling Sri Lanka out for 290.
However, Sri Lanka made a strong comeback in their second innings. Sonal Dinusha led the fightback with a brilliant century, while the lower order also stayed at the crease for long periods. With this, Sri Lanka eventually reached 429/9 before the match ended in a draw.
India remain in race for the ICC WTC 2025-27 final

The draw means India are not out of the ICC WTC 2025-27 final race. However, their road to qualification has become more difficult.
India are currently fifth in the WTC points table with 68 points and a PCT of 51.52%. Bangladesh are fourth with 55.56%, while New Zealand are third with 72.22%.
A win in Colombo would have given India a much-needed boost in the WTC standings. But now this draw means they have to make the most of their remaining seven Tests.
India have seven Tests remaining in the current WTC cycle. They will first travel to New Zealand for a two-Test series in November. After that, India will host Australia in a five-Test series in early 2027.
Shubman Gill remains hopeful after Colombo draw
Despite the disappointing draw, India captain Shubman Gill remained positive about the team’s chances.
Speaking after the match, Gill said:
“As long as we have a chance, we always keep believing, and hopefully, we’ll make it to the final.”
Gill also pointed towards India’s upcoming series against New Zealand and Australia as important assignments for the team.
