Are Indian selectors doing right by bringing Krunal Pandya back into T20I squad?

India’s T20I setup is entering another phase of experimentation, with the selectors assessing several new combinations to manage their busy international schedule.

They have an upcoming three-match series against Afghanistan beginning on September 13, followed by a T20I series against the West Indies. They will also compete in the Asian Games in September-October 2026. 

The left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder position has been an integral part of the Indian T20I side over the last decade. After Ravindra Jadeja‘s retirement, Axar Patel emerged as a regular all-rounder in the shortest format of the game.

However, a dip in his recent performances has prompted the team management and Indian selectors to explore alternatives rather than rely on just one player. 

Against that backdrop, TOI reports confirmed that Krunal Pandya‘s name has emerged in selection discussions. The left-arm spinner is 35 years old and last played for India in 2021, but his recent IPL performances have made him relevant to national selectors. 

Why Krunal Pandya’s return makes sense?

There is a reasonable argument for bringing Krunal back. The biggest advantage is his current form. Playing for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL, he finished with 335 runs across 31 appearances in two seasons. 

His contributions with the ball gave him a great advantage, as he finished the last two seasons with 31 wickets at a remarkable economy.

Most importantly, Krunal offers a great package for India, as he is a left-arm orthodox spinner who can be very economical in the middle order while also being a handy batter in the lower order. 

Krunal is also experienced in international cricket. He has made 19 appearances for India in the shortest format of the game. However, selecting him does not mean that Axar will be dropped from the XI. Both these players offer tactical options, and India will make choices based on conditions and opposition. 

The only question around Krunal’s selection will be his ability to sideline the challenges posed by his international gap. He has not played international cricket for the past five years; hence, this makes his comeback just ahead of the Asian Games a gamble. 

Therefore, going back to Krunal is defensible, particularly if the selectors want genuine competition for the left-arm spin role. However, his selection does not pose a threat to Patel’s India career alone.
