Arshdeep Singh had bowling figures of 2/35 against Ireland.
The Rohit Sharma-led India crushed Paul Stirling’s Ireland by eight wickets in the one-sided contest at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 5 in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024. After winning the match, Arshdeep Singh opened up on Jasprit Bumrah’s advice, which helped him during the clash.
After opting to field first, the Men in Blue bowlers didn’t disappoint their skipper’s decision as they ran through the Irish batting line-up on a tricky New York pitch and bowled them out for just 96 runs.
Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh set the tone right from the start as he dismissed both Ireland openers in the third over of the match. On the very first ball of the over, he dismissed Irish skipper Stirling, and on the last delivery of the over, he then castled Andrew Balbirnie’s.
Arshdeep was fully supported by vice-captain Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah. Pandya bagged a three-wicket haul, whereas Bumrah scalped two wickets. The 25-year-old speedster Arshdeep had match figures of 2/35 in his quota of four overs.
While chasing 97 runs, skipper Rohit Sharma smashed a half-century, whereas wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant’s valuable contribution of 36 unbeaten runs helped the Men in Blue win the Group A clash against Ireland by eight wickets.
Jasprit Bumrah tells us not to go after wicket: Arshdeep Singh
After winning the match, pacer Arshdeep said that he only focused on sticking with his plan. However, the left-arm speedster accepted that he gave a lot extras (wides) against Ireland.
“I made every effort to pitch the ball on the scrambled seam but the ball was swinging so much that it was hard to get it on the scrambled seam. Yes, there were a lot of wides from me,” conceded the left-armer, who bowled five wides but also took the prized wickets of openers Andy Balberine and skipper Paul Stirling in the third over,” Arshdeep Singh said during post-match conference.
Arshdeep also revealed that senior pacer Bumrah has advised them not to go after the wicket. He further added that the plan was simple: to bowl in the right areas against Irish batters and take advantage of the bowling-friendly wicket and cloudy weather at the start.
“Jassi bhai (Bumrah), with his loads of experience, keeps telling us not to go after wicket. Just keep it simple, keep bowling in the right areas and whatever result comes it’s good… whether you are able to stop the flow of runs or get wickets,” said Arshdeep.
